Site Selection
The selection of a wind energy site takes into account several factors, each of which
and combined are essential to a successful wind energy project. The factors include: 1)
areas with high sustained winds, 2) access to transmission capacity, 3) access to market, 4)
site accessibility, 5) minimal effects on wildlife, cultural or other historic resources,
and 6) Public support.
The proposed site for Adirondack Wind Energy Project located at the Barton Groups property at
Gore Mountain is unique and is particularly appropriate for a wind energy project. The sites
special attributes include:
- Measured on-site wind speeds at hub height which exceed 8 meters per second (approximately 18 mph)
- High-capacity transmission line which runs directly through the center of the project site.
- Well maintained paved road to the project site and network of roads on the site.
- A large portion of the site includes industrially zoned land which has been previously developed as a garnet mine.
- Adjacent to the Gore Mountain ski area.
